my wife and I want to import an american motorhome into spain from america, the vehicle is a LHD and we are english so the residencia is no problem. Importing into the UK is VAT and import duty free if we have lived outside of the EU for over twelve months and owned the vehicle for over six moths, is the same applicable in Spain? It seems silly to import into the UK and then go through it all again in Spain, especially as we intend to live and work in Spain.
We are not trying to avoid import duty but would love to find out exactly what the rules are and if you know of anyone who can help us we would be greatful. We have spent a lot of time in Spain so we are not completely in the dark about beaurocracy but in our experience the pro's vastly out weigh the cons, Shar

Yes It is exactly the same but you have to do the processes all at the same time, you have to apply for residencia and get the car transferred, that means ITV'd (equivalent to MOT) change it all over the only thing you may have a problem with is if the vehicle spec is different to that model in Spain then you have get a report done on the vehicle all in 30 days! can be done and it makes no difference whether it was imported into the UK if the spec is different as there are different and more rules here, we did it with a car that orignally cae from Saudi via the UK .......we did it in the end but because of the spec difference it took us 34 days and guess what we had to pay the import tax of just over 1000 euros on a 4 year old car which we had owned for a year previously, sods law, but otheres can learn from our mistakes!!
Have a look here hands VIA DE VIDA is the WAY OF LIFE...

Here ia an email recieved in May 2005 regarding importation form the UK
A vehicle that is taken abroad for 12 months or more is regarded as being permanently exported.
If you are currently in possession of a V5 registration document, a Certificate of Export (V561) is then issued by the Department instead of a V5 registration document to enable you to register your vehicle abroad. To obtain a Certificate of export you should complete the appropriate section of your V5 registration document and either return it to Export Section, Vehicle Customer Services, DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AG, or make the application to your nearest DVLA Local Office (a list of addresses can be found on our website below). However, please be aware that the Local Office is unable to accept an application more than 14 days in advance of the intended date of export of the vehicle. If the Local Office are unable to issue a V561 Certificate of Export, the application will be sent to DVLA for checking. This will delay issue of a certificate for up to 2 weeks.
If you are currently in possession of a V5C registration certificate, you will need to notify DVLA of export using the V5C/4 (notification of permanent export) slip from the V5C. You may then take the remainder of the V5C to the new country when the vehicle is being exported.
If you are not in possession of the V5 or V5C, you will need to apply for a V5C registration certificate using form V62 which is available at the Post Office® or can be downloaded from our website below. When the V5C is then received, you should send the V5C/4 (notification of permanent export) slip to DVLA and take the remainder of the V5C to the new country to re-register.
With regards to taking your right hand drive vehicle abroad, you will need to contact the Spanish Registration Authorities who would advise you further on their standards and regulations.
If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I have taken my V5C to the ITV Station. They tell me I need a Ficha Reducida for my 6 year old Range Rover - is this correct and if so, will the headlights need to be changed for LHD ones first and how can I find a Perito (expert) in my area, without going through a Gentoria (as my friend has had a bad experience with two Gestors). Also, my friend has a Mitsubishi car, which has a lift off box on the back, akin to a pick-up truck(with all round vision through glass). The registration document states it is a commercial vehichle. She got stopped by the Guardia Civil (Police) and asked to sign a document (she still has no idea what the document was). The Gestor told her she had 3 days to get the car out of the country, otherwise it would be confiscated! Trafico say this is not the case... It was the Perito who told her it is not possible to matriculate her car but we have taken a photo of it to Trafico, who say it is possible and have given her a temporary matriculation to drive the car for a month (although the paper states 2 months!). Also, we applied for residentia in April and we have done nothing to re-register the car we arrived in, so as we haven't done this within the 30 days, what tax will we have to pay? Also, we have just bought another English registered car and only just brought that one over - do we have 30 days to sort this out from the date it was driven over, or 30 days from the date it will be registered in our name at the DVLA, as my husband has only just sent the registration document off for it to go into our name? Have look here for this question [url]http://www.livespainforlife.co.uk/default.aspx?id=56 and here for more info on driving in Spain [url]http://www.spainvia.com/
You have 30 days from the start of all the procedure it should be 30 days of applying for residence to register your car to be exempt from tax as well also in the details of how to register your car. If you ask at the ITV station they will tell you if you need to change the headlams but almost defineatley
Good luck
