| Driving licence and medical certificate |
|
|
Many thanks for the information regarding the validity of EU driving licences in Spain. I have an EU licence, issued in Belgium, and have received conflicting advice about its validity and the necessity to change it to a Spanish one. I even went to the Trafico main office in Alicante, asking that the licence be registered, but they wanted to replace it with a Spanish licence. In Belgium I was told that the EU licence was valid in all EU countries, though the Belgian Consulate in Alicante could not confirm this. Your information seems at least to clear up the question of the validity of the EU licence, but indicates the necessity to possess a medical certificate.
Now, as for the medical certificate that is required (in my case every five years), I wonder where such a certificate can be obtained. Can one go to any doctor, or are there designated doctors, or must one go to specified medical centres? |

Hi David
You can obtain a certificate at a special clinic and they are located in most towns, however you dont say where you are locality this is quite a simple test of general health with an eye test and physical reactions. You will need to take with you at least
and... the fee from 30 euros dependant on the licence you have. If you need photos taken they may do this for a small charge but please do ask when making the appointment.
The certificate lasts 3 months, from the date at the bottom of the certificate but this is irrelevant if you need the certificate to make your licence legal it lasts for the duration dependant upon your age and or licence expiry date.

| I live in Guardamar del Segura. As a retired EU official, I am not covered by any national health scheme, but by the private insurance arrangements for EU institutions. If the special centres you refer to are in the local Centros de Salud, then I normally have no access to them. |

Hi David
They are separate private clinics and there is one in Guardamar at least on Avda del Pais Valenciano 29 here is the telephone number 966727520 It is not actually far from the centro de salud but I am not sure which direction to tell you to go in its called the CMA and its next to the road Miguel Hernandez where the Ayuntamiento is.
The test is very simple and you think you have failed as when you do the simulated drive there is a lot of buzzing so dont panic you are allowed a lot!
Just check for documentation should be 30 or 35 euros
Good luck

| My wife and I went to the CMA clinic in Guardamar today in order to take the test. The clinic is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 17:00 until 20:00. An appointment is not necessary (we had previously asked about this). We arrived at five o'clock and were out by six. Upon arrival, the receptionist filled in a form for each of us, based on our DNIs and requiring a single photo. We then waited no more than five minutes before being called in for the first part of the test, the "practical", carried out on a computer. This involved two tests, the first being one of intuition (estimating the time a moving object takes to travel a certain distance) and the second of independent hand-eye co-ordination (a very simply presented test, surprisingly difficult to execute!). No problem, errors are expected and the pass rate is easily achieved. The second part of the test is the "medical", being a simple eyesight test, a measurement of blood-pressure, a quick round with the stethoscope and questions about medication taken. The doctor then takes some details from one's current driving licence, fills in a computer-based form, prints it off and signs the certificate, affixing the photo previously given to the receptionist to it. We paid 34 euro each. |
