Reregistraion of cars/motorbikes

Hi Sharon
I read an article in the "Round Town News" that seems to confirm that my bike is not legal. So Knights Insurance gave me the wrong information and now it is too late to register my bike without paying the full import tax. When I first arrived in Spain, October 2006, I went to the British Consul in Alicante and paid for the document that certifies the bike and I have moved to Spain to avoid paying import duties. Now that has expired and was a waste of time and money. Do you think there is some way I can avoid the import duty when I reregister my bike since the bike has Spanish ITV and road duty?

Best regards Tony

Re: Reregistraion of cars/motorbikes

Hi Tony

This exact thing happened to us when we came here, we told we 60 days instead of 30 to do everything (this was 3 years ago though) so we did the whole running around going like you to the British consul back to traffico then to the Hacienda paying for this paper and that but then ended up with a bill of 1000 euros when we should have had non!! you can imagine I could have cried and screamed at the menchanic who gave us this information.  I had heard that due to a new EU directive that there was now no time limit and that providing you had owned the vehicle for less than 6 months but am not sure my advice is to have a look on www.spainvia.com where Brian Deller the author of Mototring in Spain is normally up to date on this type of thing or and you could contact Gisela Lied from Hondon, her hubby is also a mechanic but she helps with car transfers and is very reasonble and should know the up to date rulings as she actually works at Traffico tel 629067715. Please let us know how you get on. It may be that you still have to pay some tax like when you transfer and this is normally 4% of the value of the vehicle.

Good luck!

Hi Sharron

Thanks for your help, it looks like the only way forward. Trouble is my insurance does not expire until December, If I re-register now the insurance refund will be pittance.

Tony
