Spanish Bank Charges

A cautionary tale for anyone moving money back to UK - or to another country from Spain.

We sold a house on the Costa Brava last year, left the money in BBVA where our account had been for some years.  We recently made an offer on a house in France and contacted the bank re transferring our euros to France.  They wanted 1300 euros to do an electronic transfer (TO PRESS A BUTTON ON A COMPUTER!!).  As I thought that was extortionate and asked about the cost of a bank cheque - 300 euros for that - merely daylight robbery.

So, unless there is some other way that I missed, (a personal cheque would take a month to clear - and I had not left enough time for that) just be aware that you need to either give yourself plenty of time or it will cost a small fortune.

Good Luck

Diana

Re: Spanish Bank Charges

Yes I have heard terror tales about the BBVA, I bank with them and so did a friend of mine.  He moved back to the UK  but his house had not sold, but soon after his moved back his house sold.  The money went into his Spanish bank account (BBVA) and he asked for it to be transfered to the UK.

The bank manager put all sorts of obstructions in the way so his money stayed where it was.  Anyway he asked me to chat to the manager and try to sort things out this end he even gave me power of attorney to do this for him.  Still the manager put up a lot of problems so I could not get the money transfered to the UK,.

In the End my friend had to come over and withdraw the money himself, and this took him four days, as the Bank did not hold that amount of cash in the safe.

So be aware of the BBVA..

David

Well done for your valliant attempts on behalf of your friend David. If the manager had complied, this simple request could have been so easily solved by Spain's second largest bank and leading mortgage lender. Your friend could have been spared the journey from the UK and the inconvenience caused by having to withdraw the money over a period of 4 days. The old adage forewarned is forearmed is applicable here, and this tale may serve as a warning to perhaps avoid a similar situation in the future.

Crystal.
